These green manure biofumigants work because they contain high levels of the glucosinolate Sinigrin. When the growing mustard is chopped and incorporated, the glucosinolate reacts with the enzyme Myrosinase to produce the volatile gas Allyl-isothiocyanate (AITC) that suppresses soil pests and diseases.
